Lady Eagle Softball Season Preview

The Hinds Community College softball team is set to make their season debut February 1 when they take on Spoon River College (IL) at Renee T. Warren Field in Raymond at 2 and 4 p.m.

The Lady Eagles will be looking to build upon last season’s success which saw the program reach its first MACJC playoff appearance since 2007 finishing the year with a record of 25 – 20 out pacing their previous year’s win total of 12. The 2018 squad found itself finishing third in the MACJC in batting average and on base percentage along with finishing fourth in slugging percentage on the year. Head coach Mike Grzanich will certainly look to take his 2019 team led by 9 sophomores back to the playoffs in his 11th season at the helm of the program.

The Lady Eagles look to be led in the circle by sophomore pitchers Bryanna Luke (Lake) and Sydney Davis (Clinton). Davis transferred in from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and looks to rebound from an arm injury that forced her to sit out most of the 2018 season. Meanwhile, Luke returns to Hinds following a great freshman campaign where she tossed 81 innings for the Lady Eagles posting a 6 – 4 record, 52 strikeouts, and a 3.63 earned run average (ERA).

The Lady Eagles usher in four newcomers to contribute and bring some depth to the pitching staff. Anna Rigdon (Union), Rebecca Grewe (Flora), Cassidy Rhea (West Monroe, LA), and Braxon Dewitt(Pass Christian) will all look to be major contributors for the Hinds softball pitching roster in 2019.

The Lady Eagles return six starters to their offense including Amelia Purdy (Calhoun, LA), Madeleine Hart (Kingwood, TX), Sarah Kate Smith (Vicksburg), Mary Haydon Williams (Flora), Hannah Mitchell (Florence), and Tica Watts (Shubuta). Haley Speaks(Jayess) and Kasie Cortezie (Vicksburg) also saw time in the Lady Eagles 2018 campaign appearing in 22 and 27 games, respectively.

Purdy, Mitchell, and Hart will look to make particularly strong impacts this season building upon strong freshman campaigns. The third baseman, Purdy led the 2018 squad in at bats and was second in doubles as she posted a .372 batting average and a .586 slugging percentage last season. Outfielder, Mitchell also recorded a strong season as a freshman when she hit .304 with 7 doubles and a team-leading 13 stolen bases. Hart will serve as the power threat for the Lady Eagles this season as she tied for the most homeruns on the team last year with 7 while knocking in a team-second 42 runs batted in (RBI).

Eight newcomers will look to make an impact on the Lady Eagle offense. Samantha Keel (Olive Branch), Katie Cheeks (Shubuta), Anna Taylor Belcher (Brandon), Hanna Wilkerson (Lake), Jessica Deming (Olive Branch), Brennan Newell (Florence), Sydni Lee(Florence), and Claudette Galvan (Porter, TX) are all looking to make an impact on the 2019 season for the Hinds softball program.

The success of last year combined with the talent of the newcomers on the team has the Hinds softball program optimistic about this season’s outlook. On the upcoming season, Grzanich states, “We are looking to build upon last year’s post season appearance in the MACJC State Tournament and break through to the Region 23 Tournament.”

He further explains that he is “excited to see how well we can perform in the [pitching] circle backed with a solid defensive and an offensive unit that returns seven starters who helped guide us to a top-three team batting average in the MACJC a year ago.”

The day following the Lady Eagles’ February 1 opener with Spoon River, they will play another home double-header against Spoon River and Copiah-Lincoln Community College at Warren Field. These home games will be the first of 14 home dates for the softball team in 2019.
