In 2017, more than 7 million people nationwide had their licenses suspended. Mississippi, after the fact, reinstated over 100,000 driver’s licenses that were suspended for non-payment of traffic tickets. Driving on a suspended license is a misdemeanor, which is why we want to keep you in the know about the various actions that can lead to a suspended license in Mississippi.

What Can Cause a Suspended Driver’s License in MS

Although Mississippi doesn’t use the point system (drivers accumulate points for every moving violation they commit), the government does still keep track of your traffic violations. Some of the reasons below relate specifically to driving violations, while others are due to the violation of State Laws.

  • Driving Under the Influence (DUI) will result in a suspended license. The length of the suspension depends on the severity of the violation and whether or not this is a first or repeat offense. No matter what, you should look into finding a lawyer who is the right fit for you. You’ll have to serve time in jail each time you’re convicted of a DUI offense as well.
  • Driving without insurance is cause for a license suspension—failure to provide proof of valid auto insurance will lead to suspension.
  • Physical or Psychological Disqualification is yet another reason that can lead to a suspended license. The Department of Public Safety can order a re-examination of any person who may not be fit to drive. Driving privileges may be suspended if the examination reveals that you’re physically or psychologically unable to drive safely.
  • Reckless Driving will result in license suspension if it happens three times or more in one year.
  • If you’re found at fault in a fatal accident your license can get suspended.
  • If you abandon your vehicle on a public highway your license will possibly get suspended.
  • If you steal a vehicle or any parts of a vehicle you could face a license suspension.
  • If you’re convicted of enough serious traffic offenses and the state believes you disrespect traffic laws and disregard the safety of others.

Reinstating Your License

Your license can be suspended for varying periods of time. You should not drive while your license is suspended. After the period of suspension has expired, you may need to pay fees or fulfill other conditions before you can legally drive again. It’s important to remember that you must surrender your license to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety if the court did not take it away.

I received a letter of disqualification of my MS CDL as March 23rd, 2021. It says for DUI 1st offense , 1 year . I have not had a DUI and cannot get anyone to answer the phone at the Department of Transportation to talk to them!
