Bulldogs Capture Road Win Over ECCC

The Hinds Community College Bulldogs got back on track Thursday night (Jan. 23) as they defeated the East Central Community College (ECCC) Warriors 71-54 on the road in Decatur.

“After two tough road losses where we didn’t play Hinds basketball, we refocused our intentions in practice to get back to our brand of basketball and the guys showed that last night,” said third-year head coach Yusef Fitzgerald.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 31-27 lead in a back and forth first half. The second half however was all Bulldogs as they score 40 points in the second half to secure the 71-54 victory. The win gives Hinds its ninth victory on the season and its seventh win by 10 or more points.

“Our success starts and ends with the point guard position. We have two freshmen in Kejuan Clements and Jordan Johnson who run the back court, and while they will have their nights where they play like freshmen, these two are gym rats and students of the game. Their work ethic on and off the court resulted in them controlling the game for us tonight,” added Fitzgerald.

Johnson especially had a stellar performance last night as he recorded 18 points and six assists. Johnson is now averaging over 10 points per game and over four assists per game.

Ladarius MarshallDontrell McQuarter, and Peyton Taylor also gave standout performances last night.

“Those three sophomores are special talents. We know they are going to show up every single night,” commented Fitzgerald.

Marshall collected his third double-double of the season as he tallied 18 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocks.
McQuarter collected his second double-double of the season, and the sixth of his career at Hinds as he registered 14 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists.

Taylor also reached double figures in the scoring column as he dropped 13 points and added four rebounds.
The win improves the Bulldogs’ overall record to 9-4 on the season and 4-2 in the MACJC South Division.

Additionally, the victory moves Hinds into a tie with Mississippi Gulf Coast for second place in the MACJC South and puts them just two games outside of first place.

Hinds (9-4, 12-2) next matchup will take place on Monday, January 27 against the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) Bulldogs (12-2, 4-2) at home in Utica.
