Different Types of Commercial Fire Alarm Systems

To comply with government guidelines, commercial buildings must have functioning fire alarm systems. These alarm systems play a key role in keeping people safe if a fire occurs, which is why you need to be careful when choosing units for your building. To bring clarity to the subject, we’ll break down the different types of commercial fire alarm systems. That way, you can ensure you find the right system for your building.

Automatic Systems

When it comes to fire alarm systems, there are two basic types: manual and automatic. The automatic fire alarm systems will alert building occupants by using loud alarms if a fire breaks out. It does this with the help of heat detectors and smoke detectors. When smoke or heat triggers one of the devices, it triggers the alarm as well.

It’s important to know that you also have to be careful when choosing specific devices like smoke and heat detectors because various types exist. For instance, there are two types of heat detectors you can choose for your building, both of which detect dangers in very different ways, so be sure to purchase the right one for your needs.

Manual Systems

Whereas automatic systems use detectors to sound the alarm, a manual system requires a person to sound the alarm by hand. This typically involves pull-down stations, which are those bright red handles you probably saw all the time throughout your school years.

When installing pull stations, be very strategic with where you place them. Install them in highly visible locations that are accessible at all times. That way, if an employee causes or spots a fire somewhere in the building, they can alert everyone else immediately.

Knowing these different types of commercial fire alarm systems is an important part of keeping your building safe and secure. As long as you know the ins and outs of each piece of equipment, remain within government standards, and stay up to date with regular maintenance and inspections, your system is sure to be effective in safeguarding your building.

My dad is looking for a safety expert to install a fire suppression system to install in the three-story apartment building he recently renovated downtown. I like that you said that an automatic fire alarm system can sound a loud alarm to alert the occupants that there’s fire through the help of heat and smoke detectors. My dad was only planning to have a manual system installed because it’s cheaper, but perhaps it would add move value to the building if he has an automatic system installed. Thanks!

It’s interesting that automatic fire alarm systems use heat detectors and smoke detectors for loud alarms. My brother needs to test his fire alarm system since he just bought a new office building for his tech startup. I’ll be sure to share this with him as he looks for a new system.
