CLINTON, Miss. — The Mississippi College women’s cross country team swept the Gulf South Conference Weekly Awards as Jazmin Hernandez was named GSC Runner of the Week and Kathy Hammond was tabbed GSC Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
It’s the second consecutive week for Hernandez as she posted a school-record, collegiate-best time of 18:01.50 to lay claim to the top individual of the 5K race. The win marks her second straight after she won at the Kentucky Wesleyan University-hosted Fast Cats Classic in the Lady Choctaws’ last outing. The record-breaking time breaks Hammond’s time of 18:10.5 at the UAH Chargers Invitational earlier this season.
The Georgetown, Texas, native’s record-setting time ranks fourth in the conference this season.
Hammond posted a time of 18:45.4 at the 2020 Watson Invitational on Saturday to claim fifth place and help the Lady Choctaws to their second, straight team win. Her time is the tops among freshman in the conference over the weekend.
The Montgomery, Ala., native picked up her first freshman of the week laurel in her Mississippi College debut with a time of 18:10.5 at the UAH Chargers Invitational on Sept. 19.
Mississippi College now turns its attention to the GSC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31 in Huntsville, Ala. The Lady Choctaws were chosen second in the preseason poll in a vote by the conference’s head coaches.
