Working with an event management company through the pandemic came with several challenges.
Event management is a booming industry in most parts of the world. After spending a hectic week working, no matter what the job, most people want to let loose over the weekend by attending a party or some event that does not resemble work in any shape or form. However, since the start of the pandemic, there were some changes, and people were no longer allowed to meet and interact in large groups in person. The new normal was quite challenging, and they were unsure how they were going to get through. As an industry, event management was seriously affected.
Throughout the pandemic, people were spending most of their time remote working where they would be talking to one another remotely, and if they had the fortune of working remotely, they would be doing that through video calls as well. However, parties and events, other than the ones organized on the clubhouse app could not be handled using the same template. Since they were in-person activities, for the most part, they had to be organized in smaller numbers and shut completely. People who wanted to attend another event or were organizing them had to put the brakes on their work. They could only begin again after everything opened up again.
Learning about event management
While event management is putting together an event, there are a lot of moving parts. Some companies usually coordinate one piece of the puzzle, while others look after everything. Depending on the event management company, some would work with artist management companies and produce the entire event, while others might not and only work on bringing together the event.
Most colleges across the world, including in the United Kingdom and the United States, have a course on event management. In the course, they teach their students to go through some of the processes and understand how to organize events. Event Managers have to visualize the concept, plan, budget, and put together various events such as conferences, concerts, stage shows, seminars, weddings, theme parties, product launch parties, exhibitions, corporates,
seminars, and others. Event management in the UK currently sees hundreds companies assisting with the organization, each with its own forte.
While parties might be a large part of what they do, corporate conferences are another aspect of the work that they have to handle. Through the pandemic, with most parties postponed to a time when the authorities would ease up the restrictions, people had to organize corporate conferences, among a few others. While there were rules on the number of people who could meet, the primary smaller group had to meet in one place, and they would organize a conference for the rest of the attendees to get through remotely. There were some events and conferences that through the pandemic were taking place completely online and each person would participate from their own homes.
How are people attending conferences during a lockdown or pandemic?
When it comes to the lockdown, many changes are taking place and people are unsure of the process that they would have to get through if they were to organize an in-person conference. There can be a lot of challenges when organizing a conference, and depending on the topics and type of conference, the servers that are used have to be secure. Additionally, depending on the company, whether it is open to the public or just for specific departments, the organization process varied.
Virtual events were beginning to become a lot more popular now. While it was not the same experience, it was the best for the time, and people were attending them online. They would receive email invites to the events and would be able to participate through their microphone and camera while sitting home. Virtual conference organization was another challenge altogether but something that companies were working on to create a better experience because it did not seem like people were going back to meeting in person so soon.
Getting a job in event management
While getting a job can be challenging with the current changes that are taking place around the world, the same is true for people planning a career in event management. Coordinating and organizing an event can be quite challenging because there are multiple moving parts, and they have to all move together for a well-coordinated event.
Not all the work that needs to be done when putting together an event is technical. Some aspects of work in need of physical assistance like the stage setup, putting up the deco, and other smaller tasks. Additionally, some aspects need coordination, which is coming up with the idea, the deco designs, and the right number of people to coordinate various aspects. Before the pandemic, most event management companies used to work with college students so they would be able to make a little money on the side. Additionally, they could see if they enjoyed the process, and if they did, they could consider it a career option. Furthermore, event management is one of those jobs that has to be studied and learned on the go. There has to be a good amount of information with on ground experience so colleges and universities that are putting out the course have their students learn practically through working closely with an actual company.
The process of event management for the most part is, much like the event in itself, meant to be an in-person experience. Most of the people coordinating it has to meet for meetings and coordinate the specifics, and even put everything up in person. Through the Coronavirus pandemic, they had to make sure they were taking all the precautions needed. Wearing masks and social distancing was mandatory for as much of the process as possible. There were other changes that they had to begin getting accustomed to as well. Most companies were now making their staff bring over two requirements; a COVID vaccination certificate and a background check. When organizing a successful event, with hordes in the crowd, you want to make sure your team does not have a criminal record. Furthermore, a lot of the people on the team would come in for an event or two and might not be a part of the company. They wanted to make sure that their student background check would provide enough information for everyone to be at ease about the team. Following the same rules, they wanted to make sure they protected everyone to the best extent from COVID, which was why the COVID certificate was another mandatory requirement.
