Challenger League softball registration now open

Registration is now open for the Clinton Department of Therapeutic Recreation’s Challenger League softball program.

The popular program, which takes place for six weeks on Monday nights at Clinton’s Traceway Park, allows those with developmental and physical disabilities the opportunity to participate in softball, regardless of their skill or ability level.

Challenger League programs are open to individuals age 6 and over.

“Our softball season is one of the most anticipated sports seasons we offer, not only for the players, but for their families, friends, and our loyal volunteers, as well,” said Clinton Department of Therapeutic Recreation Director Chandra Fontenot.

Volunteers pitch to participants at various distances and speeds that help them have success at the plate. Challenger sports are non-competitive and serve as a means for participants to improve in areas such as hand-eye coordination, sequencing, gross motor skills and cooperation.

Practices and games will be held on Monday nights at 6 p.m. from March 11 through April 15 at Traceway Park, and the season closer will include a pizza party and celebration with trophies.

The cost to register is $20 per player and is due by February 26. Fees can be paid via cash, check or money order and cover the cost of shirts, trophies and the end of season party.

Registration forms are available at the Therapeutic Recreation Department office at 111 Clinton Boulevard, or email for the link to a printable form.
Fontenot says that community volunteers are welcome to help, and Clintonians are encouraged to come and watch the weekly games.

“We always welcome volunteers with our Challenger League sports and Abilities programs. Volunteers serve as buddies to participants out on the field,” said Fontenot. “Having that extra help really helps to keep players focused and on task while waiting for their turn to run or opportunity to catch. And our participants love to have a crowd cheering them on as they play!”
