Infamous Poker Scenes in Critically Acclaimed Movies
Poker is a game that leaves people on the edge of their seats. Even when you’re watching a game of poker, you can’t help but feel the anticipation of the hand. Not knowing whether it will be a winner or a loser. Not knowing whether that bluff will be called. It’s not surprising that a game that can conjure up so much drama has been a focal point of many movies. In fact, in many movies, it is the poker scenes that have been especially praised.
Let’s run you through the most infamous poker scenes in critically acclaimed movies. There’ll be spoilers aplenty here. Sorry about that. But hey, at least you’ll get a few new film ideas to watch if you’re a poker lover, which we expect you to be since you’re reading this.
Casino Royale
When most people think of classic poker scenes, they think of the James Bond movie, Casino Royale. A particularly pivotal part of the movie has James Bond gambling millions of taxpayer’s money on hand. Not long after, Bond suffers a near-fatal heart attack. So, you know, lots of drama in this scene. The Garfield Movie this is not!
The poker scene goes on for an incredibly long time, and we challenge you not to be on the edge of your seat, even after multiple rewatches. It is perfectly acted, and it is this scene that helped Casino Royale become one of the highest-rated Bond movies ever. Oh, and you won’t need a poker glossary to know what is going on. It’s been written with the layman in mind.
Maverick
- You won’t be on the edge of your seat during the poker games in this one. This classic Western movie, with Mel Gibson front and center, is a blend of comedy and drama. The poker scenes lean heavily on the comedy side of things. It is a breath of fresh air in comparison to some of the other poker movies out there.
The Sting
This is a 1973 movie. So, you know what’s scarier than a high-stakes game of poker? Well, it’s a high-stakes game of poker against a mob boss. Oh, and you’re trying to rip off that mob boss at the same time. Paul Newman and Robert Redford led the cast here. They were at the height of their game back then, and The Sting is a tremendous piece of cinema, managing to offer what, over 50 years later, remains some of the best poker scenes in movie history.
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
- The poker scene in this movie is incredibly short, but it still gets praised as one of the best scenes of all time. The reason why we have included this scene on our list, other than the fact it is awesome, is down to the fact that it actually contributed to a rise in poker playing for a short while. Not many other movies have had that effect on the game.
The Cincinnati Kid
We’re going back to 1965 with this Steve McQueen classic. This movie is just about poker, and women. Steve McQueen plays The Cincinnati Kid. While there is a ton of poker happening here, the real thrills happen during the high-stakes game against Lance Howard. We won’t spoil what happens, but there is a reason why this is classed as one of the best movies of all time.
The Cincinnati Kid is a movie everybody should see at least once. Seriously. It has breathtaking cinematography, a great plot, and some high-stakes poker. What more could you possibly want?
Rounders
Starring Matt Damon in one of his earlier roles, Rounders is a poker-focused movie. After losing big bucks to a Russian mafioso early in the film, Matt Damon has to travel around the country taking part in huge-stakes poker games in the hope of winning back some of the cash he lost. Can he do it? Well, we suppose you’ll have to watch the movie to find out.
The Odd Couple
We know that The Odd Couple is hardly the movie that springs to mind when people think of poker-focused ones. They certainly are not thinking of a comedy. But, The Odd Couple is critically acclaimed and since the friend group in the movie plays poker together, there are a lot of poker scenes that help to move the plot forward. You’ll get a few belly-full of laughs here.
House of Games
A lot of the movies on this list have poker as a bit of a side adventure. Fun, but you probably could have replaced poker with another game and it still would have been good. House of Games is different. Poker is the movie. The numerous scenes in House of Games dive deep into the whole psychology of poker. This is one of those rare poker movies where you might pick up a couple of tips and tricks on how to play the game.
Because this is a heavy poker movie (and we mean heavy), it might only be for those who are already invested in the card game. Some terms might go over your head otherwise.
Freeze Out
Freeze Out isn’t the most popular movie of all time, but it is the only movie that’s not only been critically acclaimed, but funded entirely by poker winnings. So, it stands to reason that the whole movie will have a lot of poker-focused scenes.
Freeze Out starts with a friend group challenging other people to various poker matches, often with a lot of success. The rest of the plot revolves around the friends challenging one another to a high-stakes game. The whole movie is just a blend of friendship and gambling, so if you are into that sort of thing, the whole movie will be right up your alley.
