CHOCTAW GRAD PENS DEVOTIONAL FOR GRIEVING DOG LOVERS
Clinton native and 1982 Mississippi College graduate Dr. Hal Kitchings will sign copies of Dog-Gone, It Hurts, a 30-day devotional written to console those who’ve lost beloved dogs, on Tuesday, November 12 at 4 p.m. at Alumni Hall on the Mississippi College campus. The book is published by Sunrise Press, a division of Dogwood Press of central Mississippi. Signed copies will be available for $12.95 plus tax.
Kitchings holds graduate degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has pastored for more than 25 years and returned to his home state in 2023, joining Easthaven Baptist Church in Brookhaven. He and his wife, Kellie, have two grown children, four grandchildren, and multiple dogs throughout his family tree. Dog-Gone, It Hurts is his third book.
“Grieving over your dog—a part of your family—is real,” Kitchings said. “It is genuine grief over a pet that could have been with you for many years or a short period of time. It hurts when we lose them.
“I had no idea how helpful this book would be in helping me continue to work through my own grief over the death of my oldest sister, Kathy. I feel like I’m honoring her walk with Christ, her greatest love, by trying to point people to Him. Kathy loved her family, loved dogs, and she adored Jesus Christ.”
The book, dedicated to Kathy Kitchings Nowell (an art major at Mississippi College), features her original artwork on the cover.
“I didn’t hesitate when Hal approached me about publishing his manuscript,” said Joe Lee, Editor-in-Chief of Dogwood Press. “Hal’s writing style is easy to read—like you’re having a conversation with him—and there’s relevant scripture, meaningful quotes, and coping suggestions that come together nicely in a book you’ll turn to again and again if you’ve lost a beloved dog, or any pet for that matter.”
“Loving requires knowing. Dr. Hal Kitchings loves people,” said Dr. Ivan Parke, Professor of Christian Studies at Mississippi College. “His book shows that he knows how much people love their dogs, and he offers real comfort—the Gospel—to those grieving the loss of their pet.”
