Holiday decorating trends are updated for 2024 season

Holiday decorating trends are constantly changing, year after year. This season is no different, with social media like Instagram and TikTok influencing Christmas trends.
The Christmas tree became popular in the mid 1850s and has stayed a staple in homes during the Christmas season. However, today’s Christmas trees tend to be more personalized in style.
The owners of the Cupboard, a family-owned home decor and gift shop that opened in 1971, have made it their mission to stay up-to-date on what tree decorations will be trending this Christmas.
“The biggest difference in Christmas tree trends this Christmas compared to last Christmas is that the color schemes focus less on traditional colors and are more bright, colorful and fun,” says Morgan Boyd, assistant manager at the Cupboard. “We are also seeing a return to traditional elements, with velvet bows showing up on trees and wreaths.”
Referencing one of the trees in the store, Boyd states that “our tree with pink and blue ornaments and silver stars best represents what is trending this season.” Boyd points to a white tree decked out in bright sparkly pink and blue ornaments with a green garland. Trendy trees this year are full of colorful and shiny ornaments, taking on a more maximalist style, she says.
On the other hand, Boyd says that traditional Christmas colors of bright red and green will always be trendy and likely never go out of style, so, to represent that, “we have the typical, traditional, Santa tree, with a red plaid bow on top.” The tree to which she refers is filled with lots of Santa ornaments mixed with stockings, Christmas gifts, and reindeer.
The store also displays a Chrismon tree covered in white and gold ornaments with Christian symbols ranging from nativity scenes to angels, churches and stars. Boyd says these trees are a tradition in most churches, which adorn them with handmade ornaments that have typically been passed down from generation to generation.
All three trees in the Cupboard are artificial, but Boyd says that “most people do what everyone in their family has always done, whether that’s an artificial or real tree. More and more people are getting fake trees, because they are less messy and more affordable.”
