Trash it, don’t flush it, say City officials

The Clinton Courier

The City of Clinton is reminding residents that, just because something says it is “flushable,” doesn’t mean it should actually be flushed.

Items such as “flushable” baby and bathroom wipes, dental floss, paper towels and cleaning wipes can cause massive blockages in sewer system pipes that can lead to costly damage, backups and environmental issues. Even wipes labeled “flushable” don’t break down like toilet paper and can clog pipes, pumps and drains.

Pouring fats, oils or grease (F.O.G.) down the drain can also lead to sewer clogs. Officials recommend residents adopt the “Cool it, Can it, Trash it” process for cooking grease.

Items such as diapers, cotton swabs and balls, bandages, sanitary napkins, food wrappers, aquarium gravel, fruit stickers, medications, paint, cigarette butts and chewing gum belong in the trash, not the toilet or sink drain. Even Kleenex® and other facial wipes do not dissolve like toilet paper and can cause clogs.

Residents are asked to do their part to help protect the City’s pipes and the environment.

NEVER FLUSH/PUT DOWN THE DRAIN:
▪ Wipes (baby, adult, makeup, cleaning)
▪ Diapers
▪ Dental floss
▪ Paper towels
▪ Medications
▪ Cat litter
▪ Fats, oils or grease
