Clinton students participate, play key roles in Mississippi Youth Legislature

Students from Clinton High School and Sumner Hill Junior High School recently attended the Mississippi Youth Legislature held at the State Capitol.

Students from Clinton High School and Sumner Hill Junior High School recently attended the Mississippi Youth Legislature held at the State Capitol. Attended by both public and private school students from across Mississippi, conference participants develop their leadership skills while participating in a model state government.

Participants had the opportunity to meet with Mississippi’s Speaker Pro Tem Manly Barton, Congressman Gregg Harper and Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann.

Students at the Mississippi Youth Legislature may serve as Senators, Representatives, lobbyists, press members and elected officials.

Representing Clinton High School as Senators were Tiger Huang, Aniya Collins, Jayla Hicks, Aleyna Taylor, ZZ Wallace, Hailey Miller and Rosepreet Ghotra. Serving as members of the House of Representatives were Marley Champlin, Maiya Pelt, Legend Gavin, Gina Robinson, Cheyenne Murray, Camille Lewis, Bailey Edwards Rikki Williams, Colton Lay, Havish Kumar and Malia Turner. Emily Bowers and Steven Hernandez influenced legislation in their role as lobbyists.

Clinton senior Cullen Lay served as the Mississippi Youth Governor for the conference, the highest elected student leadership position in the state. Serving on this Governor’s staff were fellow CHS seniors Reeves Radicioni, Greer Vincent, Saylor Bynum and Riley Taylor. Many of the students won awards for their debate and leadership skills during the conference.

Serving on this Governor’s staff were fellow CHS seniors Reeves Radicioni, Greer Vincent, Saylor Bynum and Riley Taylor. Many of the students won awards for their debate and leadership skills during the conference.

Students who received awards for their debate and leadership skills during the conference included Cheyenne Murray, Legend Gavin, and Gina Robinson, who were named Outstanding Representatives. Aleyna Taylor was named an Outstanding Senator. Cullen Lay, Emily Bowers and Cheyenne Murray received the Leadership Award. Maiya Pelt and Colton Lay received the Delegation Award. Tiger Huang received the Most Outstanding Legislator award, the highest debate award given at the conference, and sophomore Colton Lay was elected to the position of Speaker Pro Tem and will serve in that leadership position for the 2026 Mississippi Youth Legislature.

Taylor of Clinton serves legislative page

Keri Taylor of Clinton recently served as a page for the Mississippi House of Representatives. Pages generally run errands for officials and House staff. Taylor is the daughter of Khadija Horton and is in the tenth grade at Clinton High School. When asked about the week, she said, “I loved getting to serve as a page. I appreciate the opportunity.
