“New year, new you” is a phrase we hear every January. While it may sound cliché, the truth is the start of a new year really is one of the best times to make meaningful, positive changes to your health. After a full month of holiday meals, desserts and celebrations with family and friends, most people feel motivated to reset and refocus—and that motivation is powerful ,if you use it wisely.

If you read my earlier column on “Finding your WHY,” you already know that real change requires more than saying, “I need to lose five pounds.” Sustainable progress comes from identifying a deeper reason—your why. Maybe it’s having more energy for your kids, improving your long-term health, setting a better example, or simply feeling confident and strong again. Once you’ve identified that deeper motivation, the next step is narrowing your focus.

Instead of trying to change everything at once, choose one or two specific areas to work on this year. That might be improving your nutrition, exercising more consistently, building strength, improving mobility or cutting back on sugary drinks and increasing your water intake.

If nutrition is your focus, start small. A great goal could be cooking more meals at home instead of relying on fast food or takeout.

If exercise is your priority, try walking during your lunch break or taking a short walk after work. Interested in strength training? Begin with something simple and achievable—30 squats, 30 pushups and 30 sit-ups per day—and gradually increase as you get stronger.

The key is clarity and consistency. Be specific about your goals, make a realistic plan and, most importantly, follow through. Small daily actions add up to big changes over time, and positive progress builds momentum.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start, I’ll be offering a three-week Jumpstart Round designed to help you build healthy habits, gain momentum and start the year strong with structure and support.

As always, I’m here if you have questions or need help creating a plan that fits your lifestyle. January is the Super Bowl of the fitness and nutrition world—so I hope you jump in the game and make this your healthiest year yet.

Remember, God gave us the gift of this body—what will you do with yours?
