City Code Corner: Garbage can placement

Special to The Clinton Courier

Proper garbage can placement may seem like a small detail, but it plays an important role in keeping neighborhoods clean, safe and visually appealing. The City’s sanitation ordinance outlines a few simple guidelines that help collection run smoothly while maintaining community standards.

Garbage and refuse containers should be stored behind the front line of the home or building, so they are not visible from the street. The only time containers should be in view is when they are placed out for scheduled pickup. After collection, cans should be returned to their storage location no later than 8 a.m. the following day.

The ordinance also explains when containers should be placed at the curb. Garbage collection begins at 7 a.m. on scheduled service days, and cans should be placed at the street on the day of pickup only. They should not be set out days in advance, and they should not remain at the curb after service has taken place.

These guidelines help prevent loose debris, reduce the chance of trash being scattered by animals or weather, and keep streets and sidewalks clear. They also allow sanitation crews to service routes efficiently and safely.

It is also important to remember that until garbage is collected and loaded onto the truck, it remains the responsibility of the resident or property owner.

If a resident does receive a written warning related to garbage can placement, it is intended to serve as a courtesy notice and an opportunity to correct the issue. Warnings are part of the City’s standard code enforcement process and are used to promote awareness and voluntary compliance before any further action is considered.

Following these simple steps helps protect the appearance of Clinton’s neighborhoods and supports a cleaner community for everyone.
