Garbage rate increase for Clinton approved

By Randy Bell

Clintonians had an opportunity to voice their opinions on a garbage collection rate increase, but no one asked to speak during a public hearing which was on the agenda at the Board of Aldermen meeting March 17.  The Board voted in favor of the increase unanimously – but reluctantly.

“We don’t have a choice,” Ward 1 Alderwoman Karen Godfrey said, as she made a motion to approve the extra 4.5 per cent that’s being tacked onto garbage bills at the request of Waste Management.  The City’s contract with the company allows for an annual rate adjustment based on changes in the Consumer Price Index.

“When we renewed [the contract] and let it for bid because we weren’t happy about the price, they were the only ones that bid [on] it at all,” said Ward 4 Alderman Chip Wilbanks, as he seconded the motion.  “There’s been much discussion and gnashing of teeth.”

Ward 6 Alderman James Lott said, “Part of the contract is that they have that option to do that every year, and I think they take advantage of it every January.” Lott said it was something the Board “regrettably” was having to do.

“Not that we want to,” added Ward 3 Alderwoman Amanda Jones.

The Board’s action increases residential garbage bills by $1.25, which was effective at the end of March.  The new rate is $28.55.  A $1.00 beautification fee is added to garbage bills.  For commercial customers, the new rate for garbage pickup is $32.55.
