Payment Transaction: What are the advantages of using a digital wallet for your small business?

Upgrading a small business to digital wallet capability is a big step. As these systems become more popular, it’s wise to take a closer look and see how these apps can benefit the small business owner and make record keeping more streamlined.

What is a Digital Wallet?

Digital wallets are software applications that allow the user to store financial information, like passwords and websites, in one place. In some circumstances, a digital wallet can make carrying around an actual wallet unnecessary as all of the users’ financial information is stored in the smartphone. Many of these applications have come online in the last few years, with one of the most versatile digital wallets is offered from Xpress-pay.

Although the name may seem new, the concept of digital wallets and currency has been around since the early 1980s but didn’t take off until the 1990s. In 1997, the launch of PayPal changed the game forever. PayPal provided a way for small businesses and their customers to conduct secure monetary transactions over the internet. The industry gained steam throughout the early 2000s as more and more people began carrying cell phones.

The Ease of Digital Wallets and Cryptocurrency

One significant advantage for business owners in the digital wallet space is accepting cryptocurrency as payment for goods and services. The cryptocurrency market opened back in 2008 with the invention of bitcoin. In its infancy, bitcoin had no monetary value and was used as a reward system for supercomputers when they solved complex math problems. The potential for bitcoin to grow into the world’s first decentralized currency was soon spotted by early investors.

Since cryptocurrencies like bitcoin are decentralized, their value is not backed by any country or based on any tangible standard, like gold. Therefore, the value of these currencies can fluctuate wildly from day to day since the value is determined solely by the coin’s users. While there is the potential to make a great deal of money in a short time by investing in these currencies, there is, of course, the potential for significant losses as well.

Digital Wallets are a Safe and Convenient Option

There are some advantages for the small business owner for converting to a digital wallet system that will save time and hopefully increase profits, and convenience is one of those advantages. With accounting and payment systems located in one place, digital wallets can save with daily bookkeeping tasks with vendors and suppliers. Customers prefer digital payment options over cash because there are fewer items to keep track of, and they have direct access to their money.

Security is another reason for a significant rise in digital wallet users. Digital wallets are operated via smartphones and have some heavy-duty encryption and authentication procedures to keep transactions safe so that cash cannot compete. If money is lost or stolen, more than likely, it’s just gone. But, with the digital wallet, even if the phone is lost, the currency will be secured in the users’ account until they go online with a new phone to access their money.

Due to the relative newness of these systems, some small business owners can be reluctant to switch to a digital wallet setup. Still, the advantages of using the newer approach are growing each day.
