Civic Corner: Board Of Aldermen Update for May 23, 2025

Ricki Garrett, Alderwoman at Large
Following the approval of the consent agenda, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen welcomed Police Chief, Ford Hayman, to provide a report. Chief Hayman indicated that the crime numbers are higher than he would like but still very low. There have been 702 arrests for the year, 3000+ citations, and 10,000 calls for service. A question was asked about speeding in the city, and Chief Hayman said that any citizen can call and speak to him directly, or they can email him. Mayor Fisher indicated that he is sometimes asked how arrests could be up, while crime is going down. Chief Hayman responded that some of those arrests are for contempt of court and that the City of Clinton is holding people accountable.
In early action, the Board of Aldermen approved the authorization of right-of-way payments to Shirley Joyce Curtis in the amount of $6,537, Pamula S. Cox, a/k/a Susie Wilmott, for $3,315 and Barry Wayne Howard for $14,960 for the Wastewater Expansion Project as requested by the Clinton Raymond Bolton Wastewater Authority.
The Board of Aldermen also approved to renew a parking lease with Evans Holdings for an additional two years at the existing rental price. The Board also approved advertising for a new sewer camera system with a lease purchase buyback option for the Public Works Department. An effort had been made to upgrade the existing system, but it had not been sustainable.
In other action, the Board approved the lowest and best quote from Kirk Auto Group in the amount of $79,800.00 for two 2024 Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4×4 trucks for the Public Works Department.
In a discussion of unkempt property located at 112 Angelia Drive, the Board heard a request from the owner to allow her some time to remove a tree. A motion was made, seconded and approved to allow her until the end of the month to remove the tree. If it is not removed by then, the City of Clinton will remove the tree and add the costs to the property’s tax bill, effectively creating a lien against the property for the amount owed.
In other action, the Board of Aldermen approved a resolution for unkempt property located at 1201 Post Road and approved a resolution for unkempt property located at 114 Heatherlynn Circle.
In final action, the Board approved the hiring of a certified dispatcher, an uncertified dispatcher, and a part-time crossing guard for the Clinton Police Department and a maintenance worker and a part-time summer worker for the Public Works Department.
