Hinds Eagles football wins big on the road 42-16 at Pearl River

The Eagles of Hinds Community College continued their winning ways Thursday night (Sept. 21) with a dominating performance over the Wildcats of Pearl River Community College. The Eagles forced five turnovers and put up more than 400 yards of total offense in a rout to a 42-16 victory in Poplarville.

The Eagles took a quick 7-0 lead when DeVante Scott (Scooba) broke through the defensive line and ran 67 yards untouched into the end zone at the 10:17 mark in the first quarter.

Deveon Ball (Macon) then forced the first of five PRCC turnovers when he intercepted a pass and ran it back 40 yards to put the Eagles in good field position. Tylan Morton (Griffin, Ga.) capitalized and connected with John Hightower (Landover, Md.) on a 29-yard fade pass in the end zone to increase the lead with 7:24 remaining in the first quarter.

PRCC answered back in the second quarter with a touchdown run at the 4:30 mark and a made field goal with no time remaining in the half to cut the Eagle lead to 14-10.

The Wildcats got the ball to start the second half, but turned it over on downs when the Eagle defense made a big stop on fourth and one to give their offense the ball in PRCC territory. Morton would once again capitalize and hit Ra’Meik Wallace (Shubuta) in the end zone on a 20-yard post route increasing the lead to 21-10.

The Wildcats would answer back for the last time when they rushed 23 yards for a touchdown. After failing on the extra point, the Eagle lead was cut to 21-16 with 1:29 remaining in the third quarter.

The ensuing kickoff was returned 71 yards by DeMichael Harris (Vicksburg) to the PRCC 27-yard line. DeVante Scott exploited the good field position and ran 27 yards to pay dirt for his second touchdown of the contest.

Following Ball’s second interception of the night, freshman quarterback Erick Clark (Kemper) hit Ra’Meik Wallace on a 10-yard slant in the end zone pushing the lead to 35-16.

On the Wildcats next drive, Byron Galvin (Vicksburg) got in on the turnover party and hauled in his fourth interception of the season. After the interception, Scott sealed the deal for the Eagles when he found the end zone from five yards out for his third rushing touchdown of the evening pushing the lead to its final score of 42-16.

The Eagles put up 419 yards of total offense, including 222 yards gained on the ground and 197 yards gained in the air. Scott led the rushing attack running the ball 13 times for 150 yard and three touchdowns.

Morton was 10 for 16 passing with 187 yards and two touchdown passes.

Following the game, head coach Larry Williams was pleased with his team’s ability to force turnovers.

“I tell our guys all the time you have to make your own breaks. When the opportunity is there you have to take it. Tonight we did just that,” he said. “We made some turnovers and shortened the field for our offense.”

He singled out the offensive line for praise. “Our offensive line deserves all the credit in these first few ball games. They are doing a good job of keeping the quarterback upright and so far are the MVP of this team,” he said.

The Eagles will look to stay undefeated as they take on Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College at home on Gene Murphy Field at Joe Renfroe Stadium next Thursday, Sept. 28, at 6:30 p.m.
