RAYMOND – The Hinds Community College Eagles cruised to a 56-21 victory over the Southwest Mississippi Community College (SMCC) Bears on homecoming Thursday evening (Oct. 29). With the win, Hinds improved to 2-1 overall this season.
The Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and tacked on another touchdown early in the second quarter to take a 28-0 lead. All four touchdowns were scored via the Hinds rushing attack. The Bears quickly bounced back and scored 14-unanswered points to cut Hinds’ lead to 28-14 with 8:52 remaining in the third quarter. Hinds then responded with 14-unanswered points of their own via two touchdown passes which made the score 42-14 with 1:53 remaining in the third quarter. SMCC mustered up one more touchdown with 28 seconds remaining in the third quarter to cut the Hinds lead to 42-21. Hinds would cruise the rest of the way as they scored two more rushing touchdowns to secure a 56-21 victory over SMCC on homecoming night.
Hinds Individual Performance
Running back Dajon Richard (Patterson, La.) paced the Eagle’s backfield with 18 carries for 145 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Quarterback BeSean McCray (Orlando, Fla.) followed up his Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) Player of the Week performance with another stellar outing. McCray completed nine of his 17 pass attempts for 134 yards and two passing touchdowns. He also rushed nine times for 83 yards and one rushing touching.
Running back Robert Jackson III (Lexington) rushed nine times for 66 yards and one touchdown.
Quarterback Kobe Dillon (Ferriday, La.) completed one of his two passes for seven yards and tallied 11 carries for 35 yards and one rushing touchdown.
Wide receiver Tabashi Thomas (Douglasville, Ga.) hauled in four catches for 48 yards and one touchdown.
Wide receiver Jakarius Caston (Natchez) hauled in one reception for 10 yards and one touchdown. Caston also returned three punts for a total of 59 yards.
Jaylen Heffner (Batesville) paced the Eagle’s defense with seven total tackles including one tackle for a loss.
Artavious Washington (Lexington) and Khiry Gee (Starkville) were ball hawks in the secondary as they each collected an interception.
Hinds Team Performances
The Hinds offense was clicking on all cylinders as they racked up 487 total yards (346 rushing and 141 passing) on 72 plays. They also collected 25 first downs and scored eight touchdowns (Six rushing touchdowns and two passing).
The Hinds defense was great once again as they forced four turnovers (two interceptions and two fumbles). They held SMCC to just 272 yards of total offense on 50 total offensive plays. They also forced five punts from the Bears.
The Hinds Eagles (2-1) will be back in action on Thursday, November 5th when they take on the East Central Community College Warriors (2-3) on the road in Decatur. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
