But sometimes, you don’t have the luxury of choosing the weather on that day. In that case, you still want to check the road conditions because it can prepare you for how you’re going to need to drive on your trip.

Scope Out Parking

This is one of the least acknowledged tips out there, but it’s really helpful to scope out your parking when you need to park. This can be difficult to do, but if you already know the general area of where you’re going to go, you can find a truck friendly place to park.

 

This is especially useful because there are lots of places that say they’re truck friendly but actually aren’t. There are lots of parking spots that trucks can get stuck in or can’t turn around in, so finding a place to park beforehand can be very useful.

 

You can do this with the satellite version of google maps, contacting a friend who lives near there, or even going to scope it out on foot yourself.

Leave Room in Front While Driving

When you drive, leaving room in front of your truck can help protect you and your truck. And while it isn’t always possible to get room behind the truck, it’s always possible to leave room in front, without too much effort.

 

When doing this, there’s a reasonable chance that a road problem will happen in front of you, leaving you and your vehicle safe and unharmed.

While they can be expensive, a trucker’s GPS is definitely worth the cost. They display important information that a normal GPS wouldn’t. What info it displays depends on the GPS, but generally, they are a very useful tool for truck drivers.

 

A truck GPS can have all sorts of information, such as weight limits and speed limits on some roads, as well as exits, lane changes, and traffic reports.

Take Breaks

When you’re driving a truck, you don’t want it to suddenly stop working while you’re going somewhere. This is why it’s useful to take breaks.

 

 

 

Taking breaks not only lets you rest up but the truck as well. You can also refill the gas if you need, and check to make sure everything is functioning well. This is by far the most important tip on this list. All of these are useless if you don’t go at a reasonable speed for your vehicle size.

 

By default, trucks are much bigger than the average car, so when driving amongst them, you need to be very careful to always drive at a reasonable speed! All sorts of things can happen when you drive too fast, and the negative results only multiply in bad weather.

 

Make sure to go extra slowly on-ramps and corners, as these can be very accident-prone. Yes, even if you hold up traffic! The end goal is to arrive at your destination without flipping your truck or hurting yourself.

What if You Get Into an Accident

The first thing you should do if you get into any kind of auto-mobile related accident is to contact proper authorities and report your problem to receive help.

 

Once you do that, you should treat any injuries. You want to make sure that cuts or scrapes don’t get infected so make sure to put an antibacterial treatment on.

 

After doing everything that demands urgency, you should contact your company to inform them of the accident. Remember to be as objective as possible and to stay calm. They’ll help you get the situation under control.
