Board approves projects to spruce up city

By Katherine R. Dougan

By unanimous vote at the Board of Aldermen’s May 4 meeting, projects for accessory building construction and renovation were approved in Clinton, which will lend a fresh, spruced up look to projects in several of the city’s wards.

Robby Clarke, at 112 Pinehaven Place in Ward 3, had his request approved for an accessory building on his property to be used to store his recreational vehicle. Community Development Director Roy Edwards presented Clarke’s request to the Board, which Ward 3 Alderman William O Barnett stated, “will be an asset” to the property. The storage building for the RV will be constructed behind Clarke’s home.

“I think it is a really good idea,” Ward 1 Alderman Dave Ellis agreed. “We do occasionally see people parking RVs in the yard. Building a structure reduces the impact that having a large vehicle like that has on the rest of the neighborhood.”

In Olde Towne Clinton, aldermen approved a Certificate of Appropriateness for an accessory structure at 301 East Main Street, which was requested by property owners Chris and Scott Evans. The structure will house a washer and dryer for use by residents of the property, Edwards explained to the Board.

Exterior renovations to the old Mississippi School Board Association building were approved by the Board as requested by Moffett and Walley Orthodontics, at 489 Springridge Road in Ward 5

“It’s always nice to see people renovating, and it’s going to be nice to see that building renovated,” Ward 2 Alderman Jim Martin said. “The building needed some sprucing up. I’m looking forward to seeing you do that.” Moffett and Walley also have locations in Jackson and Madison.

The Board approved a certificate of appropriateness to allow a change for signage, awning color and exterior light fixtures at The Vault Hair Salon, 200 A West Leake Street. The request allows the owners to “replace the awning cover with a black cover, put signage above the sign, and to put gooseneck lighting above the sign,” Edwards explained. “This does meet the sign requirement for this district.”
