5 of the Most Outstanding Jockeys in the Belmont Stakes
There are qualities to look for in determining the greatness of each jockey. These qualities include their performance, win rate, and their total earnings. Hence, horse racing fanatics and bettors usually look for a horse with a great jockey worthy of their bets.
Belmont Stakes is an event in the Triple Crown that attracts honorable bettors, outstanding trainers and jockeys, and their formidable horses. Since it is the last jewel of the Triple Crown, participants, especially jockeys, would always bring their best.
Here are some of the most outstanding jockeys that proved their worth at the Belmont Stakes.
Irad Ortiz Jr.
Irad Ortiz Jr. is a 29 year old jockey from Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico. His family introduced him to the horse racing industry, who were already part of the industry as jockeys themselves.
He found interest in this career when he moved to the states in 2013. Ortiz was fond of these races, where he participated in 15 graded stakes, winning in 2014. He considered it as the best year in his career.
In North American races, Ortiz is commonly seen as the favorite pick in odds. He was regarded as the best jockey in the industry, especially when he won in the 2016 Belmont Stakes with his colt, Creator. In addition, he garnered three consecutive Eclipse Awards as the year’s outstanding jockey based on performance, wins, and earnings.
Ortiz started his career with multiple wins in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. He has also ridden famous and favored horses (by odds) in his early years. Moreover, he’s often associated with notable owners and trainers. Ortiz has a total of seven Belmont rides in his career.
Jose L. Ortiz
Jose Ortiz is a jockey from Puerto Rico who won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey in 2017. Jose Ortiz is the brother of Irad Ortiz, and both are on the lead as Top Jockeys based on New York Racing Associations. Jose Ortiz has 147 starts on the track, with 32 first wins and a win rate of 22%. He won in the Breeders’ Cup when he was in New York.
Jose Ortiz’s success made him pursue significant racing events, such as the Triple Crown races. He won in Belmont Stakes 2017 as Tapwrit’s jockey. He also won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with Good Magic and voted for the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey.
Jose Ortiz was favored and voted one of the leading Jockeys in the track, not just Belmont. He was the one who managed and rode the famous Known Agenda. Aside from the Belmont Stakes, he also won in other notable horse racing events, such as the Breeders’ Cup.
Luis Saez
Luis Saez is a 29-year-old jockey from Panama City, Panama. Like the Ortiz brothers, Saez came from a family who grew up in a prestigious racing school. He was deeply involved in horse racing because he was surrounded by horses while growing up.
After moving to the US, Saez immediately took part in the Belmont Stakes in 2013. Although he placed 13th, he improved and learned a lot, especially after participating in various stakes. However, one of his most significant wins was during the Breeders’ Cup Classic when he finished in second place.
He established his reputation during the 2016 Kentucky Derby, where he competed with other accomplished jockeys and their heavily favored horses. Unfortunately, he didn’t win first place but placed 6th, which was already impressive.
After that, Saez celebrated numerous major horse racing victories with the notable racehorses he has ridden, such as Essential Quality, Bravazo, and Maximum Security.
Jose Lezcano
In North America, Jose Lezcano has been awarded as one of the top jockeys based on his earnings. He was born on April 20, 1985, in Chiriqui, Panama. Currently, he has a total win of 63 and 11 wins from various stakes.
Inclined with horse racing ever since he was young, Lezcano moved to the United States in 2013. He rose to fame in 2006 after winning the titles in Meadowlands and the Tampa Bay Down.
Lezcano’s success became more recognized when he topped North American jockeys by earnings in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015. Aside from his numerous Belmont competitions, he also has three Breeders’ Cup victories under his name.
Lezcano also participated in the Triple Crown Series, winning second place with Ice Box in the 2010 Kentucky Derby and third place in the 2019 Belmont Stakes with Joevia.
John Velazquez
The 49-year-old John Velazquez is originally from Puerto Rico. He’s a two-time winner of the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey and one of the top jockeys by earnings, with a total of $262 million.
In 2012, he was included in the Hall of Fame for the jockeys, with approximately more than 5,900 wins. Velazquez also rode exceptionally high-ranked horses, such as Animal Kingdom, Always Dreaming, Ashado, Authentic, Rags to Riches, and Wise Dan.
Velasquez joined other significant horse racing events aside from the well-known Belmont stakes. He entered and won 10 Breeders’ Cup races. Velazquez is genuinely one of the greatest jockeys with how he can dominate any track and opponent.
To Wrap It All Up
Various notable jockeys participate in iconic events in horse racing, such as the Triple Crown Series. However, there’s a particular pressure put onto jockeys who run on the Belmont Stakes.
Jockeys know that both fans and bettors wagering in horse racing belmont have their eyes on them, waiting for the conclusion of the anticipated series. But despite that, the jockeys mentioned above have risen among the ranks and proven themselves in the industry.
