Are DUI Arrests on the Rise in Mississippi?

One of the most serious offenses that a person can commit is driving under the influence (DUI). It is often not treated as seriously as it should be, but a DUI puts not only the driver of the vehicle in danger but also anyone who happens to cross their path. The national news does not often cover the scourge of DUI arrests that occur all throughout the country, but they will take note when there is a dramatic rise in these incidents. That is what is occurring in the state of Mississippi as we speak. It is not just Mississippi though, it turns out that there were 8,280 DUI arrests in 2018 alone in the state of Massachusetts. That said, we want to focus specifically on what is happening in Mississippi at the moment to give everyone a clear idea of how bad things could potentially get if nothing is done to curtail the problem.

Crime and Punishment

Crime had been on a steady decline for a few decades when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States in 2020. It is not as though crime had completely disappeared from our society. After all, there are approximately 4.9 million people are arrested and booked every year, but it was a number that was declining at least to some extent. The problem with the year 2020 is that it made many people increasingly desperate, and it locked people away from one another and from the social bonds that we tend to share with one another when we are together. Thus, people began to behave in ways that they had not and would not have before.

A spike in alcohol abuse has meant that more people are out on the roads after having been drinking during the day. It is a scary scenario that can lead to the potential for many more injuries, accidents, and deaths. Sadly, it has also meant that the state of Mississippi has seen a large increase in the number of DUI arrests reported. It is not the most common crime, that distinction going to larceny and theft according to data from the FBI, but it is common enough and dangerous enough that we need to take note of it.

Renewed Calls For Treatment Centers

The dramatic increase in the number of DUI incidents in Mississippi has prompted many in the state to ask for increased funding for alcohol abuse treatment centers and other facilities that people with these tendencies might benefit from. The treatment centers do cost money, but it is a lot less expensive and more humane to pay for someone to receive treatment than it is for those same people to be locked up or dealt with by the justice system time and time again. If something isn’t done to treat the core of the problem, then the odds are high that someone who has committed a DUI offense will commit a similar offense in the future. Thus, it is pretty obvious that people need to receive their treatments as soon as possible, and we should all get behind the idea of helping get these individuals the help that they so desperately need. We might think that it doesn’t impact us all that much, but the truth is that we are all impacted when someone is on the road under the influence. It’s a way bigger than just how long a DUI can affect insurance, it’s a matter of life or death in most cases.

There is a great deal of pressure to do something about this problem before more people get hurt. There is hope that politicians and other leaders will take bold action to finally do something about getting this whole situation under control.
