Arrow boys track and field start season with dominating performance
By William Huff
On February 12, Clinton High School hosted their outdoor season opener. High schools from around the state of Mississippi came to participate, including Madison Central, Hattiesburg, Callaway, and many more. The Clinton boys track and field team had a dominating performance at home, and some of their athletes really stood out.
Miguel Bankston is one such athlete. While Bankston, a junior at Clinton High School, ran in both the 400-meter and the 800-meter during the indoor season, this outdoor season he is running the 800- and 1600-meter races. Clinton High School dominated the 800-meter race, as they had three runners take the top three places. Bankston came in first with a time of 2:13.26, while Casey Wright came in second with 2:14.80, and Fabian Babin came in third with a time of 2:16.74.
Clinton also had plenty of success in the 1600-meter race. Bankston, once again, came in first in the race with a time of 4:53.46. Right behind him was his teammate Christian Parks in second place, with a time of 4:54.09. Carter Gibbs, also from Clinton High School, came in fourth place.
Clinton High School continued to dominate the races in the event, as their boys’ team won eight out of eleven of the races, including all three relays. The Arrows especially shone in the 4×800, finishing with a time of 8:55.97 and beating the second place Madison Central Jaguars by almost 18 seconds.
Clinton also did very well in other competitions, placing top two in discus and shot put and winning both the long jump and the triple jump. Maximus Littleton had a close competition in the long jump with his own teammate, Rashad Henderson. Littleton, however, just edged out Henderson with a jump of 19-07.50, as opposed to Henderson’s 19-07.00. Henderson did go on to win the triple jump competition handily, and he jumped a 39-06.00. His closest opponent, Callaway High School’s Jamar Chapman, had a 37-11.00.
Clinton sophomore Creston Garlington did the same, as he jumped an 11-06.00, and his closest competition had a 9-00.00.
The Clinton boys track and field team started strong with their season opener, and their coaches believe the team will only get better as the outdoor season pushes on.
