Twenty-Five years of James Cameron’s Titanic
2022 is the year that James Cameron’s epic, award-winning film Titanic is 25 years old. A story that everyone thought they knew the end of, drew enormous box office numbers and phenomenal ticket sales revenue. It grossed $2.202 billion worldwide, making it considerably more successful than the unsinkable luxury liner that foundered when it hit an iceberg. Cameron’s film was released on December 19th, 1997. It was nominated for fourteen academy awards and went on to win eleven of them. It picked up Best Picture and Best Director for James Cameron as well as Best Cinematography for Russell Carpenter. James Horner picked up the award for Best Original Dramatic Score. Celine Dion’s sung the classic ballad which won the best original song. It jointly holds the greatest number of Oscars along with Ben Hurr and Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King. All of the accolades for the film were for the production, costumes, design, and sound and the cast did not collect any of the Academy Gongs.
Maybe the stars of the film were just too young. They went on to achieve stellar status over the next quarter of a century. The film starred a twenty-three-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio and a twenty-two-year-old Kate Winslet. It is safe to say that the sinking of the Titanic was the launch of their careers. DiCaprio had been introduced to moviegoers when he played Romeo in Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo and Juliet but his role as Jack Dawson was arguably a much more commercial role. Winslet’s portrayal of the young Rose saw her nominated for the best actress role and Gloria Stuart’s 101-year-old version of Rose saw her nominated for best supporting actress. However, neither actress won, and DiCaprio did not receive a nomination.
In 2016 DiCaprio said that he believed his portrayal of Jack Dawson in the film was the reason why directors were prepared to take risks on some of the experimental roles that he later took on. He appeared in The Beach and Django Unchained and is truly memorable for his lead role in The Wolf of Wallstreet. An academy award still alluded him until he won Best Actor for his role in The Revenant. Winslet won her Oscar for Best Actress in The Reader.
The Titanic story is embroiled in our cultural landscape. On social media, people debate whether Jack was going to be able to fit on the piece of debris Rose was floating on as the ship sunk. Many of the films’ most memorable scenes have been turned into memes and proliferate on the internet. One says that rather than wanting to learn how to fly, Rose would have been better off learning how to swim.
It will be interesting to see what is planned for the 25th anniversary of the film. The 20th anniversary saw the film re-released in Dolby Vision with actual footage of the Titanic wreck cut into the opening scenes. There are rumors that a new documentary is being made but, at the moment, these are still rumors. There are claims that Cameron, DiCaprio, and Winslet will be reuniting for a project revisiting the making of Titanic. Speculation suggests that some of the original sets may be rebuilt and used as backdrops.
If you cannot wait any longer for Cameron’s film to be lifted back to the surface of screen success, there are other ways to indulge in all things Titanic. A trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland, will take you to the Titanic Museum a fully immersive experience at the Harland and Wolff slipway. If that’s a bit far afield some of the best online slots sites offer a great Titanic game that features clips from the film, progressive jackpots, and wild reels. If you prefer a more hands-on experience, you could buy a Titanic-shaped musical box that plays the theme tune or build a 3D jigsaw out of 266 interlocking pieces.
If you have never seen the film or would like to re-watch it, you can find it on many streaming services.
