The Pros And Cons Of Silicone Ice Cube Trays: Is It Right For You?

Silicone kitchenware has been gaining popularity recently due to its versatility and ease of use. Among the various silicone kitchen gadgets available, silicone ice cube trays have become a common choice for many. In this article, we’ll look closer at the advantages and disadvantages of a silicone ice cube tray to help you decide whether they fit your specific needs and preferences.

What Is A Silicone Ice Cube Tray?

A silicon ice cube tray is a kitchen tool for making ice cubes. The ice cube tray uses flexible silicone instead of rigid plastic, making it easy to pop out the ice cubes by flexing the tray. Silicone ice cube trays outshine the old plastic ones, as they resist cracking far better. You’ll discover them in fun shapes and sizes, letting you jazz up your ice cubes. Fix some juice or coffee to add a zesty kick to your drinks.

Pros Of Using Silicone Ice Cube Trays

Durability and Longevity

One of the notable benefits of silicone ice cube trays is their durability. Unlike traditional plastic trays that might crack or break over time, silicone trays easily handle wear and tear. This durability makes investing in silicone ice cube trays an intelligent move for a longer-lasting and dependable kitchen tool.

Easy Release

The silicone ice cube tray excels in the ease-of-use department, mainly when releasing ice cubes. The flexibility of silicone allows you to effortlessly pop out the ice cubes, eliminating the frustrating struggle associated with removing ice from traditional plastic trays. This user-friendly feature makes silicone trays convenient for those who prefer hassle-free ice cube extraction.

Versatility

Another significant advantage of silicone ice cube trays is their versatility. While their primary purpose is making ice cubes, these trays offer a broader range of applications. You can use them for more than just making ice; they’re great for whipping homemade chocolates or portioning and freezing baby food. This versatility becomes a handy friend in the kitchen, letting you unleash your cooking and food prep creativity.

Easy Cleaning

Cleaning up after using silicone ice cube trays is a straightforward task. Most silicone trays are dishwasher-safe, so toss them in with your regular dishwasher load for effortless and efficient cleaning. Without a cap, odours or flavours from other foods in the freezer might mingle with the ice cubes, messing with their taste and quality. Consider covering the trays with plastic wrap or moving the ice cubes to a separate container to dodge this issue.

BPA-Free and Food-Safe

Safety is a top priority in the kitchen, and silicone ice cube trays generally excel. They are typically manufactured without harmful chemicals like Bisphenol A (BPA), ensuring they are safe for food contact. This peace of mind regarding food safety adds to the appeal of silicone trays for health-conscious consumers.

Cons Of Using Silicone Ice Cube Trays

Durability Concerns

While silicone ice cube trays are known for their durability, it’s essential to acknowledge that they are not indestructible. Over time, especially with frequent use, silicone trays may show signs of wear and tear. It could manifest as tearing or deformation of the tray’s structure. Therefore, it’s essential to be aware of the potential long-term durability concerns when considering silicone trays.

Stability

Silicone ice cube trays may lack the stability of their rigid plastic counterparts. When filling these trays with water, place them on a stable surface to prevent spills or accidents. This stability requirement is something to remember, especially if you prefer to fill your trays directly from the faucet.

Temperature Limitations

It’s worth noting that silicone has temperature limitations. While silicone trays are excellent for freezing, they may not be suitable for extreme heat applications, such as baking in the oven. Using silicone trays in high-temperature environments can lead to deformation or damage. Therefore, it’s essential to adhere to the recommended temperature range for silicone ice cube trays to ensure their longevity and functionality.

Price Point

Cost may also be a factor when considering silicone ice cube trays. Silicone trays are generally more expensive compared to traditional plastic ice cube trays, but still cheaper than say an ice maker or ice machine. If you’re working within a tight budget, the higher price of silicone trays could be a relevant consideration.

Stain Susceptibility

Silicone ice cube trays can be susceptible to staining, mainly when used with brightly coloured or intensely flavoured liquids. This staining can be challenging to remove entirely and may affect the appearance of the trays over time. To tackle this issue, it’s a good idea to steer clear of silicone trays when working with items that could lead to stains.

Lack of Lid

Many silicone ice cube trays do not come with lids or covers. This absence of a top can lead to potential issues when stacking or storing trays in the freezer. Without a cap, odours or flavours from other foods in the freezer might mingle with the ice cubes, messing with their taste and quality. Consider covering the trays with plastic wrap or moving the ice cubes to a separate container to dodge this issue.

How Long Do Silicone Ice Trays Take To Freeze?

The freezing time for silicone ice trays can vary depending on several factors, including:

Size of Ice Cubes

  • Smaller cubes freeze faster.
  • Standard-sized ice cubes typically freeze within 2 to 4 hours.
  • Larger or uniquely shaped moulds can take longer to solidify.

Freezer Temperature

  • Colder freezers speed up the freezing process.
  • Ideal freezer temperature is at or below 0°F (-18°C).
  • Warmer freezers may prolong the chilling time, requiring more patience.

Type of Liquid

  • Water, being a simple liquid, freezes relatively quickly.
  • Beverages with high sugar or alcohol content freeze more slowly.
  • For speciality ice cubes, pre-chilling the drink can help expedite the freezing process.

The Verdict

Silicone ice cube trays offer many advantages that make them a valuable addition to any kitchen. Their durability, ease of use, versatility, and food-safe properties make them an excellent choice for those seeking a reliable and convenient way to make ice cubes and more. Cleaning is a breeze, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing they are BPA-free adds to their appeal.

While they may have some minor drawbacks, like potential durability concerns and price considerations, the overall benefits far outweigh these limitations. So, if you’re looking for an ice cube tray that simplifies your life in the kitchen and adds a touch of creativity to your beverages, silicone ice cube trays are worth considering.

I purchased Customized Ice Cubes from Siligrams. They were very expensive ($90 including a silicone lid) and they looked terrible. Their customer service was horrible.

Not sure which customized trays you are talking about. $90.00 is alot.

The regular ice cube trays come in hybrid versions today. I’m going to try some. They have hard plastic on top to give rigidity which helps with handling, including filling under a faucet, rather than pure silicone forms which are annoyingly floppy. The bottom is silicone to help with the release. Supposedly you can release each cube as needed or twist the tray to release all at the same time. Many of these have lids and optional bins that he trays can nest on top of.
