Civic Corner: Board of Aldermen meeting recap

After designating the month of May as Lupus Awareness Month in the city, the Board of Aldermen approved the consent agenda and moved into the regular agenda.  Our Department Head Report was provided by Anna Nutt, executive director of the Clinton Chamber of Commerce.  Director Nutt discussed the latest Leadership Clinton class, which is smaller this year to focus on each individual participant more. She also discussed the Youth Leadership program, a two-year program in which the participants meet once a semester. There are eighteen participants this year.  The Red Brick Roads Festival, a joint effort with Main Street Clinton, was a big success with Friday night’s attendance being the largest ever.  The Chamber membership is now 385, with 242 of that number being small businesses.  Other events, including the Christmas Parade, Yule Run, Chamber Gala and Taste of Clinton, have all been successful.

In early action, the Board of Aldermen approved two payments of $21,000 and $25,600 to Right of Way Technology, Inc. for professional services related to the Wastewater Expansion Project, as requested by the Clinton Raymond Bolton Wastewater Authority. The Board also approved a right of way payment to Cureton Industries, LLC in the amount of $250 for the Wastewater Expansion Project.

A request to accept a proposal and authorize Mayor Fisher to execute a contract with Prewitt Contract Services for custodial services for the Parks and Recreation Department in the amount of $47,000 annually was tabled by the Board of Aldermen for further discussion. The Board of Aldermen then approved the acceptance of bids received for the 2024 Surface Transportation Block Grant pavement improvements, Springridge Road and Clinton Boulevard Overlay Project, to the lowest and best bidder, Hayes General Construction, LLC in the amount of $916,605.40.

The Board of Aldermen also approved the request of Public Works Director Phillip Lilley to terminate a utility billing contract with Tyler Technologies and enter a new contract with Muni-Link.

Several new employees were approved for the City of Clinton, including a booking and detention officer and a part-time dispatcher for the Clinton Police Department and two maintenance workers for the Public Works Department.

The Board of Aldermen then voted to go into Executive Session to discuss and approve the firing of a City employee.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Space will be provided in each issue of The Clinton Courier to the Board of Aldermen for a recap of each meeting. Aldermen are asked to volunteer to provide this recap for the Courier.
