Fire Department asks for donations to rehab vintage truck
By Randy Bell

When the Clinton Fire Department (CFD) got the Board of Aldermen’s permission to sell the City’s first fire truck in February, some citizens were upset to see a piece of history being let go. But Fire Chief Levius Buckley says it would have been too expensive to try to repair the 1955 Chevrolet 5400, calling it “a bit of a money pit.”
Buckley says the rusty old truck probably hadn’t been cranked in years, and he believes putting it up for bids through an online auction marketplace was the proper course of action, since the department has more critical needs, including firefighter pay and new equipment.
Now, the department is asking for public donations to refurbish another vintage fire truck. In a Facebook post, CFD says the goal is to get the 1964 Mack “in optimal running condition and looking like it did in 1964.”
Many Clintonians will remember the Mack from being part of the Christmas decorations at Station 1.
According to the department, “This truck, while it could not serve a purpose to fight fire, has the potential to be a parade truck and valuable memorabilia from the history of our great city.”
Repairs are needed to the truck’s fuel system, clutch, brake system, hose bed and its exterior finish.
The Facebook post says, “Many people donate to our department throughout the year, and every donation is met with great appreciation. We would love to share this project with you!”
To help with the restoration of the fire truck, donors are asked to bring a check with their desired donation to any Clinton fire station. Buckley says an online donation option is not available, because, due to statute, all donations must be approved by the Board of Aldermen.
