Clinton Community Nature Center to hold living history event in commemoration of Black History Month
“Join us for a living history event led by our own, Dr. Prentiss Cox, as we take a short walk to the site & delve into the rich history that thrives on the Nature Center’s grounds.”
The Clinton Community Nature Center will be holding a living history event in commemoration of Black History Month led by their very own Dr. Prentiss Cox.
“The Sumner Hill School Site is believed to have been the first public school for African-Americans in Hinds County. In 1935, on a site near Price Hall, African-American children were educated in the Sumner Hill School.
Like most schools in rural Mississippi, this was a “six month” school that went only to the eighth grade. Sumner Hill School most likely started in 1872. Now all that is left at the school site is the cistern, the privy bases found nearby, some brick, and an occasional desk part.”
The event will be held on February 6th, 20th & the 27th from 11am-12pm, behind the old Sumner Hill School that once served the African-American community in Clinton.
Dr. Prentiss Cox is Chair & Prof. Emeritus of Biology at Mississippi College and a Past President of the Clinton Community Nature Center Association.
