Kaitlyn Walker wins Clinton’s fourth Lindy Callahan Scholarship
Special to The Clinton Courier
Clinton High School senior Kaitlyn Walker was recently named as the 2023 female recipient of the Lindy Callahan Scholarship for District VI, an honor that comes with a $1,500 scholarship.
Only sixteen seniors from across the state are selected each year for the award. One boy and one girl athlete from each of the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s (MHSAA) eight geographical districts are chosen for their academic accomplishments as well as their participation in high school athletics and extracurricular activities. Walker is only the fourth Clinton Arrow to receive the award since the program was launched in 1996. Shelby Dean was awarded the scholarship in 2020, with Ty Irwin earning the scholarship in 2016 and Jake Files in 2012.
Walker is a member of the Lady Arrows Track and Field team, a member of the Lady Arrows basketball team and is a member of the CHS Culinary Arts competition team.
“We are very proud of Kaitlyn,” Clinton’s Athletic Director Dr. Brian Fortenberry said. “She is very deserving of this honor and joins a great group of student athletes from Clinton who have won the Lindy Callahan scholarship for District VI.”
“Kaitlyn has performed at such a high level in the classroom, in basketball, and in track and field, and we’ve just grown accustomed to being successful in the things she’s been involved in,” Dr. Fortenberry added. “It’s been fun watching her grow over the last several years, and we wish her the best.”
The Lindy Callahan Scholar-Athlete awards were launched in 1996 to honor Mr. Lindy Callahan, a long-time athletic director and coach at Gulfport High School and Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame inductee.
Walker has signed a letter of intent with the Mississippi State University track and field program.
