Election reminder: two runoffs to be decided

By Randy Bell

On December 2, Clinton voters will help determine who will represent portions of Hinds and Madison counties in the Mississippi Senate. It’s a bit of unfinished business from the November 4 special election to replace former senator John Horhn, who’s now mayor of Jackson.

A Clinton woman, Kamesha Mumford, led the field of seven candidates but fell short of a majority, polling 39 per cent of the vote. She’ll face Letitia Johnson of Jackson in the runoff in District 26, which includes north Clinton. Johnson collected about 27 per cent of the vote in the November election.

While the Senate runoff will be on the ballot only in certain areas of the city, voters across Clinton can help to choose the next Hinds County coroner on December 2. Jeramiah Howard and Stephanie Meachum will meet in a runoff.

Howard got 41 per cent of the vote in a special election four weeks ago, and Meachum received almost 17 per cent, with four other candidates eliminated. The runoff winner will replace Sharon Grisham-Stewart, who retired as coroner at the end of last year.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on December 2. Clinton voters will cast ballots in the same locations which were used for the first election.
