How to Identify Faults in Marine Refrigeration Systems

One of the most vital machinery system in a ship besides the engine is its refrigeration system. It is required to maintain the correct temperature of all the rooms and items within the desired limit. As the main support system for most guest and food items, a refrigeration system is a machine that needs to run continuously on ships. However, just like all parts of the ship, this refrigeration system can also get cranky once in a while. Some of these issues are common but needs immediate attention.

Here are some tips on how to identify problems in the Marine refrigeration system and how to rectify them.

Compressor Frequently Start and Stop

If maintaining the right temperature of the ship is getting hard to achieve, the compressor might be shut in and out frequently. This kind of issue needs to be addressed right away. However, these problems can be solved on the spot, but there are some issues that require boat refrigeration repair services to rectify the issue. If solving this issue personally, check the suction filters if it is clogged. If clogged, it will lead to sudden power cut-outs. Clean the filters regularly as much as possible.

The second thing to consider is the valves. If the machine compressor valves leak or not properly working, this will lead to sudden power cut-in and cut-out of the compressor. If this happens, change all the defective valves.

Check the Compressor

Two things can happen with the marine refrigerator compressor, it starts then immediately stops. When the compressor in the circuit starts and stops suddenly, it can be because of some not threatening reason. First, the level of the lube oil is below the required level. It can be because of a leakage happening from a broken seal. To solve this, identify where the leakage is and replenish the oil to its correct level. Second, the motor overload is activated. Ensure that the electrical motor is properly working.

Unusual Sound from the Compressor

If you hear an odd sound coming from the machine that is far from usual, there might be a problem with the mechanical parts inside the compressor. The common reason is that the oil pressure is low. Ensure that the compressor has enough oil and no foaming oil is visible. Replenish the lube oil if needed.

Check the Evaporator Coil

Another common problem in the marine refrigerator system is the icing of the evaporator coils. If there’s ice formed in the coils, this is due to the low-temperature setting. Increase the temperature of the coil or adjust the sensor. Another reason is that the defrost option is not functioning well. Identify if the defrost system is working regularly.

These are some things that let you identify any problems with the ship’s refrigeration system. Take into consideration that these machines are delicate and very important to the day to day operation. If the problem is out of hand, let the professional services do the job. Nonetheless, it is for the welfare of the ship, the staff, and the customer.
