What are the Benefits of Working from Home?

When the pandemic forced companies worldwide to shift their employees to work virtually, it came with a lot of difficulties.

From the sudden shift of their systems to providing their employees the means to work in the comfort and safety of their homes, the shift was cataclysmic in terms of time, adjustment, and costs. But for some, this sudden shift was very beneficial for a lot of companies. Increased productivity and happiness were just some of what the employees experienced throughout this whole ordeal.

Nobody can blame us, after all. Being able to work on time without the stress and hassle of commuting or worrying about being late, being able to relax while working, and dressing however you want is just some of the perks of working from home. You can even eat and drink all you want as long as it’s not affecting your work. All in all, shifting from office work to virtual work was not easy, but it came with a lot more benefits than most employers imagined.

However, now that the fear of the pandemic has decreased and major establishments are starting to open up again, employers and employees are forced to choose between working from home or office work. While both have their pros and cons, we are here to talk about the advantages of working from home, and here are some of them.

Your Office, Your Rules

Since you’ll be working from home in the comforts of your own home office, there are no rules and regulations as to what you can do with it. You won’t be forced to work in a room with a big desk, a looming screen, and little to no decorations to fill up your office with. On the other hand, working in your own home office is liberating.

You can decorate it how you want, like putting up posters of your favorite band or something, or even add more appliances like a water station, coffee machine, or even your fridge if you want food in reach all the time. You can even put home gym equipment like rowing machines if you want to.

And with a perk like this, employees like you and me will be much more comfortable, leading us to be more productive and happy, which is unlikely when we’re forced to work in a dreary off white room with no life in it except the sound of the air conditioner and the clacking of the keyboard.

Increased Productivity and Performance

There’s nothing more annoying than focusing on your work but then getting interrupted and distracted due to your coworkers’ noise pollution and interactions. That said, when working from home, there will be fewer interactions with your workmates, which means less interruption.

There will also be less work gossip, which means fewer work politics, which, as we all know, we care little about; that is when you’re not trying to go up the ladder, at least. And most of them all, when working from home, there is very little noise, except your own, which prevents us from distractions.

When done right, remote work can allow both employees and employers to focus on things that matter, including performance. Not only that, without stressors like commuting and office noise, people can do their work much more efficiently and fast. This is unlike office work that can create false positives like having employees come in earlier to have more work, which is detrimental to the employees themselves.

According to a FlexJob 2020 survey, the respondents who thought they were productive working from home are much more productive than working in an office. In the survey, 51% of the respondents said they were more productive during remote work, and 68% of them answered that part of their increased productivity and performance came from less noise pollution and distractions.

Setting Your Schedule

Most companies who shifted to remote work allowed their employees to have a flexible work schedule. For example, writers, content creators, and web developers can work whenever they like as long as they meet their deadlines. That said, if you’re an employee who constantly has the urge to work 8 hours a day, then having a flexible schedule is truly a blessing because it allows you to still have 8 hours without actually working at 8 am.

And even if you do have to work in specific hours, you can still very much enjoy it since you can do whatever you like during break time since you’re in your house, unlike spending break time in your office that locks you in a building with nothing to do but socialize or eat in silence.

Final Thoughts

The COVID-19 pandemic surely affected a lot of aspects of our lives. However, not all of them are necessarily bad things since with forced limitations and restrictions on going out and socializing, we now have more time for ourselves and work. With a more balanced and healthier work-life, you can be happy and productive at the same time.
