What are the best products for controlling traffic?

traffic lightWhen you think about safety products, what comes to mind? Fire extinguishers or maybe personal protective equipment? Probably not ones that improve safety in your car park, and yet these can be dangerous places if no measures are put in place to protect people and vehicles. Installing traffic control equipment is one of the most effective ways to prevent collisions and improve the overall flow of cars and pedestrians too.

Keep reading to find out what the best products for controlling traffic are, and how they could be of use in your workplace.

Car park barriers

Helping you to control who enters and exits, barriers create a great security system for your car park. They are able to restrict entry for vehicles over a certain width or height, depending on the type of barrier you choose.

Car park restriction barriers also eliminate the potential for people using your car park as a shortcut, creating a safer zone with fewer hazards. This also means that in the case of a fire, there is less risk for evacuating employees, and the fire services will be able to reach your premises quicker.

Many car park barriers are designed to be highly visible, usually with a reflective coating, making them safe and easy to use.

Barricades

Traffic barricades are self-standing panels, such as gate barricades, plastic water filled barriers, or barrels, that can be used to direct pedestrians to keep them out of certain areas – e.g. where cars pass by. They can also be used to guide vehicles, for example through construction zones without getting damaged. A portable barricade can be easily moved and re-adjusted as needed.

Signboards

Putting up signs around your car park to notify drivers of the rules and regulations is also a great way to control traffic. In the UK, the Department for Transport has set out regulations for traffic authorities to follow and there are three main sign types:

  • Warning signs: these triangular signs warn drivers before they approach a potential hazard. A ‘humped crossing’ sign is an example of a warning sign.
  • Regulatory signs: these give notice of requirements, prohibitions or restrictions, and therefore indicate what a road user should do. An example is a ‘Stop’ or ‘Give Way’ sign.
  • Informational signs: these rectangular signs provide information such as directions and routes to road users.

Speed bumps

Speed bumps calm the flow of traffic, lowering the average speed at which cars pass through your area. They can reduce accidents and near-misses.

These traffic control products can be used anywhere from public roads to entrances, exits and car parks and are available in different speed ranges depending on where you will be installing them.

Cones and drums

Traffic cones, drums and delineators can be used on public and private roads to warn vehicles and pedestrians of hazards. Cones are highly visible and attach to a sturdy black base, which prevents them from toppling over and creating a traffic hazard of their own.

While cones, drums, and delineators vary in size, each one is designed to allow for easy transport to and from the worksite. They can also be stacked to save space when they are not in use.
