One Clinton Alderman Steps Down & Another Looks To Step Up

Chapman announces candidacy for Clinton’s Alderman At Large

Robert ChapmanBy Robert Chapman

Dear fellow Clintonians,
My name is Robert Chapman, and I currently serve on Clinton’s Board of Aldermen as the Ward 3 Representative.

Two and a half years ago, I had the opportunity to join the Board of Aldermen and assist in the efforts to effectively represent the constituents of my ward.

Early in my tenure, I took a stance on the rights of landowners, standing up for longtime citizens with agricultural land going back generations and played a role in expanding the rights of landowners on properties zoned Residential Estate.

I joined forces with my fellow board members to actively make the most of our 2% Parks & Rec tax, pointing out that if we are to make a difference in our parks, we need to fight to bring them up to par and have a vision for the future.

I’m excited that I’ve been part of the efforts to move our wastewater expansion project further along, meeting with both state senators and our representative in Washington DC.

And I’m extremely excited that I got to play a role in enacting Mississippi’s largest sporting lights renovation project in the history of the state.

I’ve not shied away from supporting economic development and celebrating the true, authentic diversity that makes us who we are.

From the start of my time as an Alderman for the City of Clinton, I’ve constantly said that decisions are made by those who show up. I’ve made it a point to meet with citizens when they need to talk about issues, and meet face to face, because presence matters. Though we may not always agree, I’ll always show respect for the true weight and validity of the voice of the citizens–all citizens.

With the encouragement and support of my wife, Megan, my kids Charlotte and John, and individuals who have been the backbone of this community, I’m excited to announce that I’m seeking to be your next Alderman At Large.

This is the City that has made me who I am today, and we, collectively, shoulder the burden of continuing to make this city one we can be proud of today and one our children can inherit tomorrow.

I humbly ask for your support as we strive towards continuing the great work of which we have been called, serving this great city.

Ward 2 Alderman announces he will not run for re-election

Jim MartinBy Jim Martin

Dear fellow Clintonians,
I have decided not to run for re-election as Ward 2 Alderman. It has been my honor and privilege to serve for 24 years as Ward 2 Alderman for the past nearly 12 years and as the Planning and Zoning Commission Ward 2 representative for over 12 years, 10 years as Chairman. It is with mixed emotions that I announce this decision. I love the City of Clinton and appreciate the opportunity to serve. It is, however, time for someone else to continue this service. My bucket list is long and I want to free up time to address it. I plan to continue to volunteer my services when needed.

I welcome the opportunity to discuss the role of an Alderman with anyone interested in running for the position. Qualification to run begins January 2 and ends January 31.

Thank you,
Jim Martin
